Holy Paladin Art Image

In this article, we explain what the best statistics are for Holy Paladins (WoW 4.3), how the class benefits from each of them, and what your reforging strategy should be. We also detail what the various caps are and why they should be attained. The statistics priority is important as it influences reforging strategies as well as itemisation choices (gear, enchants, and gems).

Make sure to check our Gear Optimisation Guide, which serves as a support guide for this article. The other articles of our Holy Paladin guide can be accessed from the table of contents on the right.

2.1. Statistics Explanations

Intellect is your most important stat, which provides the most benefit; you should look for this stat in all of your upgrades, as point for point it surpasses any other stat. It provides you with Spell Power and a higher mana pool, which improves your mana regeneration through effects such as Replenishment Icon Replenishment and Divine Plea Icon Divine Plea.

Spirit and Haste Rating are both are extremely valuable stats for Holy Paladins. Which of the two is of higher value for you depends on your gear level and any external sources of mana regeneration.

Spirit is the Cataclysm healer stat, and is an excellent source of mana regeneration. You should always aim to have items with Spirit, whether it is found innately on the item or it is reforged.

Haste Rating is extremely important because it lowers the cast time of your heals, which is of particular value for Divine Light Icon Divine Light and Holy Light Icon Holy Light, and it lowers your global cooldown, bringing it closer to the desired 1 second global cooldown, which benefits all of your instant cast spells. There is no gear level where Haste Rating loses its value.

Even though Critical Strike Rating does provide various benefits, it is inferior to Haste Rating and Spirit, and as such it should only ever be chosen over Mastery.

Mastery is your worst stat, despite being slightly improved in Patch 4.2.

2.2. Spirit vs Haste Rating

Both Spirit and Haste Rating are throughput stats. Spirit allows you to cast more heals, or more expensive heals, before running out of mana, thus meaning you can heal more. Haste Rating allows you to cast your heals faster, thus meaning you can heal more.

Which of these two stats you prefer on your gear depends on how your current mana-management situation is. If you are finding yourself not lacking mana, whether due to there being multiple Mana Tide Totem Icon Mana Tide Totems present in the raid or simply because of good healing from your fellow healers, then you should prefer Haste Rating over Spirit. If mana is of any concern to you, then Spirit should be prioritised higher.

2.3. Haste Rating vs Critical Strike Rating

As mentioned, the benefits of Haste Rating far outweigh those of Critical Strike Rating. Even if the actual healing numbers produced at the end of an encounter (HPS) were identical for players using Haste Rating and Critical Strike Rating, or even higher for the Critical Strike Rating user, Haste Rating provides you with much more stability and reliability.

Critical Strike Rating provides burst healing, over which you have no control and which may well end up simply overhealing, and not being there when it is needed the most. Haste Rating, on the other hand, provides a permanent cast time reduction for your heals, allowing you to possibly get in an extra heal before having to move. At any rate, finishing a cast sooner allows you to begin another cast on a different player sooner. This final aspect is something that Critical Strike Rating is simply unable to help with, as even if your first target gets healed to full because of a critical strike, you may not reach your second target in time.
